Lucky For You (Never Too Late Book 3) Page 2

Her body tightened and tightened as she reached closer to her release when he pressed down on her pretty little clit, rubbing slightly rougher. Her moans and cries filled the room, mixing with the sound of their bodies coming together. He felt her go over the edge of pleasure a mere second before he lost his own control, his release shooting out of him, his grunts and her moans filling the room.

Exhausted, he tried to hold himself up so as not to hurt her with his weight. Her nose nuzzled his neck. He looked at her, and his semi-hard dick twitched at the sight. Fuck!

Red hair spilling over the white pillowcase, a sexy, satisfied smile on her lips, and her green eyes closed. Her expression one of content and ecstasy. He had been the lucky S.O.B to put it there. He rolled off of her, discarding the condom, tying it, and tossing into the garbage can before undoing the belt that held her hands above her head to the headboard.

  “Mmm…”

  “You okay?”

“Yeah,” she whispered, that soft smile still on her face. He rubbed her wrists and didn’t miss the slight wince when she put her arms down. He pulled the sheet over them and settled into bed next to her, bringing her body as close as possible to him as he lay on his back.

He should get up, offer her a drink, and get her the hell out of his room. But he didn’t. Instead, he gently kissed the top of her pretty head before stroking her silky tresses, one hand moving to rub her wrists. “Did you like playing?” he asked, and she nodded against his chest. “I need the words, baby.”

“Yes, Rex. I did. That was…”

“Fun?” he guessed and liked how her breath tickled the bare skin of his chest.

“Incredibly fun.” She looked up at him and licked her lips. “Do you always like to umm… play?” she asked, that sweet twinge of pink falling over her skin. Now he knew that when she blushed, she blushed everywhere.

“Not all the time, but I like the control. Why? Have something in mind?” he asked, and the way her eyes glittered let him know he was in for a fucking treat as his dick came back to life slowly.

“Maybe,” she said, slightly shy, which surprised him.

Not that he had gotten to know her all that well from the moment they had left the bar and caught a cab. They’d made out, their first kiss so damn hot and heavy it didn’t end till their cab driver cleared his throat twice upon arrival at Rex’s hotel. But in between making out and foreplay, he had found out she’d never played, had never handed over control to a man like that. He was pleased as punch she had trusted him to take care of her, but why she did was beyond him. They had just met, but there was a pull to her he couldn’t explain, and it was obvious she felt it, too.

“Keep touching me like you are, and I’m sure we will be able to play in no time, baby…” His voice was hoarse. He had no idea how this woman did this to him, but fuck, he wanted her again. Moving to his side, he had her lie on her stomach. The way she followed his orders humbled and honored him.

He traced her body with feather-light touches. Every curve. Every dip. Every inch of her body was touched gently. He moved to sit on his knees behind her, and she raised her gorgeous, plump ass up so he could knead her flesh like dough, loving the way she felt in his hands.

“Rex…” she whimpered, and he smiled, enjoying the way she gasped his name. A mixture of a prayer and a plea. He leaned in and bit her back, licking and kissing the spot to take away the sting, loving the way she threw her head back, her red hair right where he could fist it in one hand.

“Shhh… lift that pretty ass, baby,” he growled, and she did as he ordered. A second later, he had both his hands on her ass and his face between her legs until she shook with need for more and he was hard once more.

“What did you want to do, Key?”

“Ride… ride you… please!” He sat back on his haunches and smacked her ass lightly, loving the way it jiggled.

“Up.” She scrambled quickly. He lay down on his back, sheathing his dick with a condom he’d thrown on the bed. Before he could utter a word, she straddled him and sunk her sweet little hole over his hardness. He was on edge, feeling her ride him. The vision she made in front of him was almost too much. He pinched his eyes closed for a second.

Opening them slowly, he was entranced by the vision she created. His eyes moved from her pretty full lips that were currently parted. He put a finger in, and she sucked on the tip as she stared into his eyes. He knew he wasn’t going to last. Her fiery hair was wild and sexy, her bare tits bouncing as she sucked on his finger. It was all too much. She drove his control out the window. He bucked up when she grinded down. Their bodies in sync, now one, he held on to her with both hands, her mouth against his just as fireworks burst between them simultaneously. She convulsed around him as he held on to her tightly.

The room was dark apart from the city lights and moonlight filtering from the floor-to-ceiling window of his room. The only things he could hear were their heavy breathing and the harsh way his heart was beating. Slowly, their breathing evened out. They were still connected, his arms around her waist, her face resting in the crook of his neck.

“Okay?” he asked, still breathing hard, and she nodded.

“Let me clean up and I’ll be right back,” he told her, pulling her face to his so he could kiss her.

“Okay,” she whispered. With a sweet kiss on his shoulder, she got off of him, and he reluctantly went to the bathroom and took care of the condom. Splashing cold water over his face, he looked at his reflection in the mirror and smiled at the sight of the red mark on his neck.

After turning off the faucet, he walked out into the room and went straight to the bed, where she was lying on her side. Her eyes following him as he walked to her. Kneeling on the floor in front of him, he rested his chin on the mattress, his hands in her hair.

“You okay, baby?” Her green eyes glittered and she nodded. “Mind if I get into bed with you?” he asked and was gifted with a soft smile.

“It’s your bed, Rex,” she reminded him, but then said, “I’d really like that.” He cuddled into her, exhaustion hitting his body and mind the moment his head hit the pillow and the softness of her body next to his.

  “Key?”

  “Hmm?”

“I’m here for another day,” he felt the need to share.

“Me, too,” she mumbled against his bare chest, and he was glad he hadn’t thrown on any clothes, enjoying the warmth of her whispered breath and body.

As her delicate fingers played over his chest, he realized it had been a long time since he had done this. Cuddled with a woman. Usually, he was all about getting in and getting out, but something about the redhead called to him like a lighthouse in a dark sea.

“Spend it with me.” His voice sounded more confident than he felt. What was he doing? He didn’t do this.

“I don’t think that’s a great idea.” She surprised him by saying, her body moving away from his for a second before straddling him.

  “Why?”

“Because all this is, is one incredible night. For both of us.” She was right, of course. He’d been the one to whisper those very words on the trip over to his room. God, he was a moron.

“It can be two great nights and a great day…”

  “It could, but I …”

“I like you, Keira,” he told her honestly, and she giggled. Fucking giggled, but her moonlit face brightened in a way he couldn’t get himself to look away from. Her skin seemed to glow and her pretty nipples beaded up. His mouth watered for them.

  “You don’t know me.”

“I know we feel amazing together,” he told her honestly, and her face softened. A second later, she shook her head.

  “Rex…”

“Think about it,” he pushed. He didn’t want this to be over. Something deep within him was yelling at him not to give up.

“Okay,” she whispered, leaning forward to kiss him.

“Sleep,” he growled. He was exhausted, but fuck if she riled up his body.

&nbs
p; “Okay.” She smiled against his lips. She tasted of strawberries and smelled like soft vanilla and sex.

She leaned down and curled into his side, his hand at her hip, drawing small circles. Their breathing evened out, and before he knew it, he fell asleep with a smile on his face.

  Chapter Four

  Keira- two months later

“Mom, I’m starving!” Megan groaned. Her fourteen-year-old daughter was obviously tired.

“Okay. Let’s see what we can find?”

“Yelp says there is a place called Rob’s Diner like two blocks ahead,” she shared as she stared down at her phone. Keira smiled. “It looks good, let’s try it out!”

“Is that it?” she asked, pointing at the huge sign and glanced over as Megan smiled.

“Finally!” Meg moaned, throwing her chestnut-brown hair into a ponytail.

Keira slowly and carefully pulled the small moving van into the back lot and was thankful to find it semi empty, since not only was she driving the stupid moving truck, but her compact red SUV was hitched to the back of it.

She parked at the end of the lot, and they hopped out of the truck they had been in for almost five hours. After a quick stretch, they walked into the diner, where an older but pretty waitress led them to a table. They ate and talked and laughed. As tired as they were, they were both excited about the adventure they were embarking on. With Keira’s divorce being final, she’d sold their home, and with the help of her sister, she had found the sweet, small town of Whispering Springs after the unforeseen emergency Jenn and her had dealt with after their Vegas trip.

Keira stood to use the bathroom and looked out the diner’s front window on the way out, a smile playing on her lips about where Megan and her lives were going. She had rented a cute bungalow just outside of town and would be working not even a block from where she stood now at a local salon. She felt hopeful and light. A feeling she hadn’t felt for two months now.

  Not since Vegas.

At the thought of her secret rendezvous, butterflies started to spread their wings even as a bit of regret washed over her.

She had fallen asleep to the strong beat of Rex’s heart thumping away, only to be woken up by the soft chime of her phone. She’d slipped out of bed and answered it and had received such devastating news she’d had to get dressed immediately, jumping into a waiting taxi with her sister inside. It took them directly to the airport, where they took a red-eye back home to Los Angeles.

She hadn’t thought ahead at the moment. Time had been of the essence, and she had left without leaving her number, email, or even a good-bye. With a shake of her head, she focused on the street outside. It wasn’t terribly busy, but there were quite a few people out and about.

A man in a police uniform caught her eye. Her heart quickening at the familiarity of the way he stood and had been looking at her before he turned. But as far as she knew, she didn’t know anyone in town other than Hailey Sanchez, who owned Honey’s Beauty and Spa, and Janet Briggs, whose house she was renting. She tried to focus on the man, even though he was too far away and her eyes were too tired to see him clearly, but she almost thought it was him. Her Rex. She was delusional. She knew better. She had to be a realist. Luck and love had never been her thing.

“Ready, Mom?” Megan asked, tapping her on the shoulder, thankfully snapping her out of her romantic and pointless thoughts.

“Yeah. Let’s go see our new place.” She smiled at her daughter, who was now fed and semi-rested, was shining with excitement. Which was good, since they had a lot of unpacking to get done in order to settle into their new home.

  Chapter Five

  Rex

When he glanced into Rob’s Diner, his heart stopped at the flash of red, freezing him. That was what the color had been doing to him these past two months. Now, looking in from across the street, his heart slowly picked up its pace. It couldn’t be, could it? He stood there until the woman turned to look out and clenched his hands into fists. It was her.

The look on her face told him she was a million miles away and something primal, almost caveman-like, rushed through him, hoping it was thoughts of him that put that look there. A pretty smile brightened her face, reminding him of the first time he had seen her, and it felt like his world shifted beneath his feet.

Shit, what was she doing here?

Just as he was about to step down the sidewalk, so he could rush into the diner, his radio chirped, alerting him about an emergency across town. He turned to rush away even though every molecule in his body was yelling at him to turn around and talk to her.

  ***

For a Monday, things were strangely quiet. Parking in the diner’s back lot, he saw an unfamiliar red SUV, and his heart jumped slightly at the possibility of seeing her again.

With a deep breath, he swung the back door to the diner open. He heard Leti holler hello at him, and with a nod of his head he walked over to the front to sit at one of the breakfast bar stools. His high school buddy and owner of the place, Rob, walked over to him, though Rex didn’t pay much attention to him. No, he was focused on the flash of red in one of the booths in the back reflected in the mirrored wall.

"Do you need a menu or do you know what you want, bud?" Rob asked. Rex shook his head, ordering his usual while he looked at the back of her head.

"Newbie," Rob mumbled low as he poured Rex a cup of coffee.

  "Oh?"

"She's going to work at Honey's, in from LA, renting Janet's old place." Rex's head flew up, and he met Rob's amused stare.

"Off of Richmond?" He didn't know why he asked and knew Rob wasn't an idiot, but thankfully he didn’t ask why Rex was so interested.

  "Yep."

  "Huh."

"She has a kid who started over at the high school today." A kid in high school? How didn't he know that? Not that they had talked a lot, but didn't women usually talk about their offspring? Not that kids bothered him, not in the least. Shit, he was the high school girls’ volleyball coach. “Recently divorced, single. Pretty smile,” Rob kept jabbering on.

“How the hell do you know so much?” he asked in wonder. Rob smirked back with a shrug.

“My job to know,” he said before he turned around to get Rex his breakfast platter from the kitchen.

He watched Hailey Sanchez strut over and hug Keira hello before she sat in the booth. His radio chirped at him. It was dispatch letting him know they needed him. Rob nodded, knowing Rex had to leave.

The entire way to the station, all he could think about was how small the world was to have her show up in his small hometown from LA. And how much he wanted to see her again.

  Chapter Six

  Keira- a week later

She was running late. How the hell she forgot her purse at home without realizing she had until she dropped Megan at school was beyond her. Well, not really. She was a bundle of nerves. New city, new home, new clients. There was so much on the line it made her nervous; and nerves only made her mind spacey.

She was rushing back home and then to the salon, hoping against hope that she’d make it there on time. She was lucky that new clients were taking a chance on her to begin with. She couldn’t risk them thinking she was a flake and spreading that around town like wildfire.

She had met a number of new people, mostly women, who’d stopped by Honey’s to say hi and luckily for her, had set up appointments to see her. Rushing toward her house just on the outskirts of town, her stomach sank when she saw the red and blue lights flashing behind her. Crap was all she could think as she pulled over on the dusty, lone road. Her heart raced. This was the last thing she needed. She didn’t even have her license. Reaching for her glove compartment, she paused. Shit. She did everything online and had let Megan talk her into going paperless. When was the last time she had printed an updated proof of insurance?

A knock on her window startled her, and she took a deep breath to steady herself. She could just explain. She was only two minutes away from home; maybe the police officer wou
ld follow her home and she could get him what he needed.

“License and registration, please,” a gruff, slightly familiar voice spoke when she rolled down her window. She only saw the flatness of his stomach covered in the navy blue of his uniform.

  “Officer, I’m so sorry…”

“For?” the gruff voice interrupted her, and her nerves got the best of her. Could she get arrested for not having her license and proof of insurance?

“Please step out of the vehicle.”

“What?” She frowned. She watched the cop’s massive body step away from her door and huffed herself out of the car. “Look, Officer, I’m sorry. I left my purse at home and let my daughter talk me into being green because she watched this docu—” Her blabbering stopped mid-sentence when her eyes met his head-on, and she saw the stormy depths she had only seen every night in her dreams since that night in Vegas.

She had no words. She almost wondered if she was imagining him in front of her. There was no way it could be him.

“Key.” Key. He had called her that during the night they’d shared. No one had ever called her that. Not once. Only him.

“Rex.” She couldn’t help the way she whispered his name. The way her stupid heart skipped a beat wouldn’t let her even try to make it sound like she had herself under control.

That was when she noticed he was scowling at her, and she realized he wasn’t happy to see her. Not at all.

“Keira, I clocked you going sixteen over the speed limit.”

“I’m sorry,” she mumbled, her cheeks warming. Great, that was the last thing she needed now. To blush and turn a horrible tomato-red.

“You’re new to Whispering Springs, but you have to know that speeding—”

“I’m sorry. The road was empty, I was in a hurry, I really shouldn’t have—”

“No, you shouldn’t have, but I guess rushing off is your specialty.” His voice—like his body—was tense. She looked at his sexy, square jaw. The slight scruff looked almost like he had somehow forgotten to shave that morning. It was sexy on him. But not sexy enough for him to talk to her like that.
